One, not so sunny day, Larry and Mary discovered they had a problem. The bank was about to foreclose on their home and they didn’t know what to do. Lucky for them, everyone else did.

All Larry and Mary knew was that they were up a creek without a paddle. Losing their home would be the easy part. It’s what happened after that would really hurt.

Their “A” level credit score will become an “F”; it’ll be 3-5 years until that score starts to recover; at least 5 years until they can qualify for a new home loan; 7-10 years until it’s cleared from their credit history; and a lifetime of checking the “foreclosure” box on future home loan, car loan, and credit applications.

For Larry and Mary, foreclosure wasn’t much of an option at all. And they weren’t alone. When the housing bubble burst, there were lots of people left holding the soap.

According to the smart people at the University of “We Know What We’re Talking About,” nearly 1 in 7 homeowners is behind on their payments; nearly 1 in 2 people know someone in foreclosure; and every 3 months, nearly 250,000 new families enter into foreclosure.

To make things worse, 1 in 4 US homes is underwater or upside down, which means the house is worth less than what is owed on it. In Las Vegas, Nevada, the number is 7 out of 10. Talk about coming up craps.

But what Larry and Mary soon realized, with the help of, well, ME, was that foreclosure wasn’t their only option.

Believe it or not, the bank is not a money sucking vampire that wants to take your home. Banks actually lose 30-50% more money when forced to accept a foreclosure. Foreclosure is a bad option, for homeowners, for banks, and for vampires.

Given their situation, a good option for Larry and Mary, and many Americans like them, is a short sale.

A short sale occurs when the bank allows you to sell your home for less than what you owe on it.

Unfortunately, a short sale won’t save your home. But it will save your credit. And this is important, especially if you ever want to by another home. And most people do. Think of it like this: A short sale won’t help you keep your home now, but it will help you buy another one in the future.

The benefits of doing a short sale over a foreclosure are significant. Here’s a quick comparison.

Just so you know, it does take more to short sale a home than a depressed property value and a desire to sell it. It can get a bit tricky at this point, which is why you need a qualified agent, trained and experienced in short sales, who will negotiate the best terms for you.

So, whatever happened to Larry and Mary?

Turns out all they needed was someone to show them which end was up. Someone with a paddle. Someone who could make life about their dreams, again. Someone like…ah, you get the point.

Using the wonderful words of acclaimed writer, actor and allround know it all (I mean that in the best of ways) Stephen Fry I have created this kinetic typography animation. If you like what you hear you can download the rest of the audio file from Mr. Fry’s website. stephenfry.com and then go to the audio and video section at the top of the page and look for the file entitled language. You can also find the file on iTunes by searching the name ‘Stephen Fry’s Podgrams’.

I loved this particular essay on language and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to make my first kinetic typography video. I hope you like it and even if you dont I would like to heard what you think in the comments section. Also I know that at points the audio does not match the text so you do not have to write that. It is because I copied the transcript off of Stephen’s website and it was not 100% exactly what he said and i did not notice until I was well underway. However these cases are few and far between.

Just incase you were wondering the programs I used to make this were all by Adobe. Mostly After Effects but also Flash and Illustrator. Flash for the changing background colour transitions and illustrator for putting the words in to the shape of ‘language’ before loading it into After Effects to animate.
